University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - Movement Disorders Center
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is devoted to the care of people living with atypical parkinsonism syndromes, and have been developing our atypical parkinsonism program since 2017. Our center offers comprehensive care to patients with atypical parkinsonism diagnoses, with seven highly trained movement disorders specialized neurologists, a highly specialized nurse practitioner, a movement disorders fellow, and a parkinsonism dedicated social worker and center coordinator for our CurePSP Center of Care. Our center has close collaborations and easy referral access to cognitive behavioral neurology, neuropsychology, geriatric psychiatry, urology, neuro-ophthalmology, rehabilitation specialists, palliative care, nutritionists, and other specialties needed in the multidisciplinary care of people living with atypical parkinsonism syndromes. UNC has a fully equipped autonomic testing laboratory, offering full autonomic reflex testing including sweat testing, and cardiovascular testing (heart rate deep breathing, valsalva, and tilt table testing). Our center has developed a detailed referral network throughout the state of North Carolina to be able to refer our non-local patients to therapies and specialists that are familiar with atypical parkinsonism syndromes.
In addition to individual office visits, we also offer the UNC Atypical Parkinsonism Interdisciplinary clinic. In this clinic, patients with PSP, MSA, and CBS are seen by a movement disorders neurologist, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and pelvic health therapy on the same day at the same location. Patients seen in the interdisciplinary clinic undergo a complete psychosocial assessment prior to attending the clinic. Each patient is discussed in interdisciplinary rounds at the conclusion of the clinic, and detailed assessments and recommendations are mailed to the patient afterwards by the clinic coordinator, social worker, and our CurePSP Center of Care coordinator Ms. Maggie Ivancic. Our center has a dedicated support group for PSP/CBS, and one for MSA, both facilitated by Ms. Ivancic. Due to our center’s dedication to education and outreach, Dr. Sklerov provides regular educational lectures on atypical parkinsonism syndromes to allied health professionals and collaborators, medical students, neurology residents, physical medicine and rehabilitation residents, geriatrics fellows, and neuroscience graduate students. Dr. Sklerov also gives talks at regional and national educational events. UNC boasts state of the art research facilities, with a long track record of excellence in research in parkinsonism and other neurologic disorders. Overall, our team provides valuable resources for patients, families and caregivers and the center’s members serve the community of North Carolina by providing outreach education and advisory services to lay organizations.
