Understanding the Diseases
PSP, CBD and MSA are progressive, neurological diseases caused by abnormal folding of proteins in brain cells. There are no cures yet, but treatments and support are available.

Multiple System Atrophy
Overview
Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal degeneration (CBD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) are brain diseases that can cause changes to speech, balance, walking, swallowing, vision, cognition and autonomic functioning. They can also involve symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease including tremor, stiffness and slowness. Because of this, people may initially be diagnosed with Parkinson’s and you may hear PSP, CBD and MSA referred to as “atypical parkinsonism” syndromes. They are neurodegenerative, meaning that symptoms may change and worsen over time.
“Atypical parkinsonism” is a term frequently used to refer to diseases that look like Parkinson’s disease in many ways, and may even be initially diagnosed as Parkinson’s disease but then have other symptoms not as commonly seen. These “atypical” symptoms may include earlier and more profound changes to vision, balance, and speech as well as a lack of response to the Parkinson’s disease medication.
PSP, CBD and MSA are considered rare, especially compared to more common neurodegenerative diseases of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. However, about 25% of people with PSP, CBD and MSA are accurately diagnosed. Many healthcare providers are not familiar with these conditions, leading to an often lengthy and complex diagnosis journey. At this time, treatment cannot slow the progression of these diseases, although there are many options to manage symptoms and care. Educating the medical community to lead to accurate diagnosis and improved care is a priority of CurePSP.
We recognize that a diagnosis of PSP, CBD or MSA can bring about many questions, emotions and complex care considerations. We are here to provide education and to support you through your journey.
