About the Study
The goal of this study is to improve the quality of life of individuals with PSP by improving their sleep through a remote trial process. Research shows that individuals with PSP often have profound sleep disruption. Not only were these individuals sleeping relatively short periods at night, they were also not recuperating lost sleep during the day.
This study is testing two FDA-approved sleep-related medications. One of these medications targets nuclei which are relatively preserved in PSP and therefore may be uniquely suitable for treating sleep disruption in PSP. The second medication is a more general sleep-inducing medication.
The study will identify whether one of the medications is more effective in treating the apparently characteristic pattern of sleep disruption in PSP. As part of our study we are also assessing the related effects on a series of behavioral measures including general well-being and quality of life. Our hope is that the study outcomes will show increased night time sleep and improved general well-being for our participants.
This is a relatively short study, which will hopefully lead to recommendations to medical professionals on which sleep medication to prescribe to individuals with PSP.
